GarageFonts is an independent type foundry based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. It was established in 1993 in Del Mar, CA, primarily as a vehicle to distribute experimental typeface designs created for Ray Gun magazine. Recently it has undergone a transformation. The foundry&#x27;s catalog has been refreshed and optimized focusing on a smaller and eclectic group of fonts, including new releases and reissues of timeless designs. GarageFonts aims to continue its original mission of supplying designers with innovative tools, creating brand new fonts and dusting off old classics from the garage for release into the wild and wonderful typographic ecosystem.

Jon Young is a designer and web developer based in Pittsburgh, PA. His passion for typography was ignited at the Graphic Design program at American University in Washington DC. He is a graduate of the TypeParis class of 2017, and in 2022 started running the legendary GarageFonts type foundry. He has built web applications for the CakeType and GarageFonts type foundries, and published his first typeface Fuqua in 2022, a project initiated at TypeParis and inspired by his hometown of Pittsburgh. He is a dedicated and inquisitive designer using a human-centered approach to design and build intuitive and compelling products, working with a diverse client base including design agencies, museums, type foundries, and large universities. As the proprietor of GarageFonts, he aims to continue its founding mission of supplying designers with innovative and expressive tools, creating brand new fonts and dusting off old classics for release into the wild and wonderful typographic ecosystem.

An austere grotesque with a hint of 1990s flair. Designed in the suburbs of Washington DC.

Fuqua is a slab serif family that is solid and sturdy, yet warm and friendly. A contemporary slab with wide, full forms and weighty foundations. It was inspired by both the grit and geometry of steel factory machinery from the late 19th century and the approachable vibe of Pittsburghers. Available in 20 styles and 2 variable fonts, Fuqua was initiated at TypeParis in 2017 and named after John “Frenchy” Fuqua, a legendary Steeler.

Paying homage to the 1960s and 1970s designs of Tom Carnase and Herb Lubalin, Homage Condensed is a digital revival and recutting of LSC Condensed in two weights along with italics and numerous stylistic alternate characters.

Metroflex Narrow is an urban, multi purpose typeface, engineered like a machine. The design was inspired by the Fritz Lang’s Metropolis, a silent film created in 1926. The idea was to design a standard type system that fits into the world of Lang’s Metropolis. Metroflex Narrow features original ideas and solutions that have roots in the present while inspired by past designs such as Univers, Futura, Steile Futura and DIN.
