Pieter Van Rosmalen’s CakeType joins TN

Pieter van Rosmalen founded CakeType in 2004 primarily as a boutique foundry to distribute some of his early typefaces. In 2008, Pieter started <a href="/type-foundries/bold-monday/">Bold Monday</a> together with <a href="/font-designers/paul-van-der-laan/">Paul van der Laan</a>. The type foundry’s initial retail collection merged the CakeType library and Paul’s typefaces. However, some of Pieter’s older type designs didn’t really fit the Bold Monday library and remained in “the vault”—not Prince’s legendary vault, but just as cool and mysterious. CakeType reopened its online doors in 2022 to serve as a vehicle for those hidden gems. This dedicated space allows them to shine in all their quirky glory.

Pieter van Rosmalen studied advertising and graphic design at SintLucas in Boxtel and graduated from the postgraduate TypeMedia program at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague in 2002. He runs <a href="/type-foundries/bold-monday/">Bold Monday</a>’s Eindhoven office and the boutique foundry <a href="/type-foundries/caketype/">CakeType</a>, typically working on ten different typefaces at the same time. He has designed retail as well as custom typefaces for clients worldwide, such as NBCUniversal, Audi AG, General Electric, IBM, and football club PSV. One of Pieter’s designs is used for street signs in South Korea.

Cake Mono is a monospaced version of Cake Sans, developed for use on the CakeType website. It adds Cake Sans’s undeniable flair to coding, office correspondence, and screenplays – Hollywood, here we come! To make each letter advance the same width, certain forms (i, j, l, t) took cues from a typeface used for the Robotron 202 typewriter, also known as Optima 202. Alternates for these glyphs are available via stylistic sets. Like its sibling Cake Sans, Cake Mono looks wide-eyed at the world.Cake Mono comes in three styles and supports Latin Extended, including Vietnamese and Cyrillic. Cake Sans originated from letters drawn in 2006 for use in the logo of Bureau Jeugdzorg Noord-Holland. Back then, it was a stencil alphabet consisting only of capitals. Pieter developed the original design into the current bold weight, then added light and regular weights. With its open letterforms and narrow width, Cake Sans remains supremely legible while fitting more letters on a line. Its squarish shapes with straight sides feel equally at home on paper and the pixel grid. Pieter introduced a few idiosyncratic details to add warmth and whimsy to the space-saving sans serif. Cake Sans’s letterforms may be condensed, but its vision is expansive. Besides Latin Extended, the font family supports Vietnamese and the Cyrillic alphabet.

Other foundries can be unspeakably cruel to their fonts when creating stencil variants. They cut up innocent letterforms, mercilessly slicing stems and curves until the characters are reduced to fragments of their former selves. We at CakeType prefer to take the organic approach. Cake Sans came to life as a stencil design. It was then nurtured, patiently and lovingly. The letter parts grew at their own pace until they fused together to become Cake Sans. However, the original Cake Stencil was also carefully preserved in our typographic greenhouse until it was ripe for general use. The type family includes a rough Applied variant.

Is Cake Mono not typewritery (typewriter-ish? typewriter-esque?) enough for you? Cake Type–the typeface, not to be confused with CakeType, the foundry; notice the space–is a rough version of Cake Mono. Its irregular contours soften up the technical appearance of the letters by suggesting ink spread on paper. Hear the clickety-clack of typewriter keys triggering the arms; feel the metal type bars hit the page. If not, may we suggest sounding out the rhythm with your mouth while typing? Cake Type acquires materiality that adds a human touch to your text.

Vandertak immortalizes a piece of Dutch cultural heritage in typographic form. In 2013, Pieter digitized the capitals spelling out “Holland Amerika Lijn” on the facade of the famous Hotel New York in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. The lettering was commissioned in 1916 by Christiaan Bonifacius van der Tak, who worked on the extension of the Holland Amerika Lijn building. At first glance, it seems as if the typeface has a reversed contrast. But this is not the case. Because the original lettering was applied so high on the building, the horizontals were made heavier to avoid having them look too thin when viewed from the ground level. These optical corrections give Vandertak its recognizable appearance. Vandertak comes in seven styles and supports Latin Extended and Cyrillic. Belying its evocative name, Whale is a delicate, elegant design. Available in a single thin weight, this wide monospaced typeface exhibits fluid forms referencing the giant Cetacea’s graceful motions through the ocean waters. Like its namesake, Whale’s generous width takes up all the space it needs. Preceding a capital letter by a parenthesis and a hyphen generates double-wide swash capitals thanks to built-in OpenType wizardry. Alternate characters with emphasized ball terminals and large quotation marks add to the design’s playfulness. No one said the typewriter genre needs to be bland and businesslike. Whale comes in one style and supports Latin Extended, including Vietnamese.
