Memimas and Brushland are two new script typefaces from Type-Ø-Tones that simulate handwriting in different stages of life. Alternates and OpenType features help them flow across the page, making them look seamless and effortless.

Memimas is not only an affectionate reminder of primary school days, but also Type-Ø-Tones’ first-ever custom typeface, originally commissioned by Barcelona-based publishing house Barcanova[link] in 1991. José Manuel Urós originally designed the script for use in a series of children’s books; since then, the typeface has evolved into a family of four weights with corresponding italics and a robust feature set that includes alternate caps, ligatures, an extensive set of numerals, and contextual alternates that make typesetting this script a breeze.

Brushland has its roots in custom work, too, when a branding agency approached Laura Meseguer for a typeface to make a wine label stand out. When Meseguer started the design process, she grappled with the question: how could she stimulate the feeling of writing? That's where the contextual alternates (“calt”) [link to article] come in. There are up to four different versions of each letterform; these context-specific alternates are programmed into the font, by Joancarles Casasín, to combine the variants, replace the letters, and avoid glyph repetition as the words are composed, though typographers and designers have ultimate control by activating or deactivating the calt feature. Like all Type-Ø-Tones fonts, Memimas and Brushland can be licensed 24/7—for print, web, mobile apps, and ePubs. Webfonts may be tested for thirty days and desktop trials are available upon request.
