As a graphic and type designer and letterpress printer living in Madrid, I have always loved old vernacular type designs. Every aspect of manual typography, calligraphy, lettering, and letterpress, fascinates me.As I love joint projects about letters, I am part of Familia Plómez, a pre-digital typographic collective and letterpress workshop based in Madrid, Fetenletters, a group working on documenting Madrid’s street letters, as well as Unostiposduros.com, a Spanish typographic website and collective.

Graveur is a Renaissance style text face based in the work of the French punchcutter Robert Granjon (1513- 1589). Working on original artifacts kept in Museum Plantin-Moretus in Antwerp, observation of his punches, matrices and printed materials resulted in a extense type family. Despite been a Granjon style typeface, Graveur tries to capture the overall style of Granjon rather than simply being a slavish copy of a particular source. Started as my project at Expert Class in Type Design in Antwerp, Graveur has grown to become a typeface with four optical sizes and seven weights, plus italics and an ornaments font. It also has variable fonts for extra fine tuning. With a huge character set and a heavy use of OpenType features, Graveur is a Granjon style typeface that will fit any of your Renaissance person needs. In 2022, Graveur was awarded with GOLD in Text Typefaces category in the European Design Awards.

Graveur Variable

Pliego (Spanish for Spread) has rough angular shapes with unexpected details, but its proportions are classic and help to set running texts with an even and readable paragraph texture. This contrast is visible used at large sizes, where Pliego can show off its witty and fearless personality, with lots of ornamental features.

Rotulo is a contrasted sans family which combines the thick &amp; thin signpainter’s style and some 70s feeling in a huge font family with 90 styles. A visit to an exhibition of Spanish movie posters by Jano was the beginning of Rótulo (Spanish for Sign) project. Classic thick &amp; thin signpainter style was featured in many letterings of those posters, as it was a very common style in 60s and 70s Spanish design. Unfortunately, today very few Contrasted Sans are seen, something that was quite common years ago has fallen into disuse in favor of Helvetic monotony. Rótulo recapture all that personality, with an extense range of weights and widths to be used in striking headlines and short texts.

Xunga is a playful bold font. My goal was to design a typeface able to fit any layout with boldness and cheerfulness, mixing a sign painter taste in the uppercase and some of my crappy calligraphic reverse contrast explorations with the flat brush for the lowercase. I designed several of widths to fit the page, and though about a different way of expanding the family shifting the horizontal stress axis to move the letter weight in different heights, making a 15 fonts family, suitable for making bold layouts. Xunga has an extended character set for European languages as well as Vietnamese, and shows all its potential with OpenType-savvy applications. Every font includes ligatures, catchwords in discretional ligatures, contextual alternates to avoid conflictive glyph pairs and localized forms to avoid problems with several glyphs and languages.
