Joanna studied architecture and graphic design, but is passionate about letters. She went on to acquire an MA in Typeface Design from the University of Reading, UK in 2011, where she won a coveted Granshan award for the Artigo font family.Upon graduation, Joanna returned to her hometown of Porto, Portugal to teach type design at the School of Art and Design of Matosinhos, ESAD. During that time, she published several typefaces for Google Fonts and Indian Type Foundry. She designed Canberra, a sharp slab serif published by FontYou (now named Black[Foundry]), and designed one of the first Devanagari fonts on Google Fonts, called Karma, followed by the Tamil font Arima.

Anona is an upright italic sans serif typeface that shows handwriting shapes in a sans serif, perfect for packaging and playful identities. Explore the stylistic sets to see all the different shapes. Artigo Display came about as an exploration of the Artigo text typeface. It is a contemporary interpretation of handwriting shapes in a display version of the italic. It is expressive and retro style. It has five weights that bring flexibility to this display family. Artigo Display won a Certificate of Typographic Excellence from the Type Directors Typeface Competition in January 2018.

Laca is a semi-sans serif inspired by retro Portuguese packaging of soaps. Laca is the Portuguese word for hairspray. The starting point was to design a typeface that would bring a familiar feeling of closeness and warmth while giving it a modern look, ensuring it works well on modern platforms. It’s a lively typeface that brings texture and personality to the text. Perfect for branding and all communications. An upright italic version available through the stylistic set brings even more friendliness to the font. The result is a versatile typeface with many OpenType features that bring stylistic alternates to the designer.

Lemongrass is a script typeface for display use. Brush lettering, the ocean, and the strong winds in Porto inspired it. It has low contrast and smooth connections to get a good rhythm in the text. Lemongrass is excellent for branding and packaging where it will shine, but it can also be used in small texts, creating beautiful content. Lemongrass has many ligatures, swashes, and alternative shapes that will make your brand unique. It supports most Western European languages, making it a more helpful display font. Lemongrass Caps come to complement the main style. It gives more flexibility to the Lemongrass typeface.
