Newlyn's irresistible take on a timeless classic

For nearly three decades Miles Newlyn has been designing custom and retail typefaces with rounded, soft endings. The world-renowned typeface for the Tate galleries in London and the families New Atten Round, New Rubrik, New Zen, and New Farm are the most notable examples. The genesis of all this work was an elliptical, seriffed blackletter Newlyn designed in 1993. That typeface was in turn inspired by Cooper Black, but Newlyn's newest release, designed in collaboration wit Leo Philp and Riccardo Oloco, truly revisits the beloved classic. Cooper Black has been the belle of the ball for nearly a century, and its magnetic personality and charming quirks continue to draw attention. But there’s a new kid on the block sure to turn heads. New Kansas keeps things light and casual but is polished and well-rounded enough for a family dinner. Comfortable in its own outlines, it can laugh about itself while entertaining everyone else. The “Kansas” in the name is an homage to the U.S. state where Cooper Black’s designer Oswald Cooper was raised. Rooted in the heartland, New Kansas grew into a full-fledged family with consistency through shapes, styles, and weight distribution.
